District 9 Review

A bit late. I saw it last Friday with the CQV Films crew. It was very different I have to say. The basic plot is that in 1985 a spaceship comes to earth over Johannesburg, South Africa. The aliens on board take refuge in the city and are move to slums and are treated as second-class citizens. The film begins and a documentary with a regular man working for a company inspecting the alien slums for suspicious activity. I wont go into any other details because of spoilers. The film had a 30 million budget, which is pretty low for a sci-fi/action movie, but the aliens looked great and the action was superb. I like that the protagonist was just a normal guy and not some hard core action hero. You can really sympathize with the main character and the aliens. He really gets desperate by the middle of the movie and you feel genuine sorrow for him. The film does an interesting take on the aliens come to earth genre. Very original. 10/10.

Avatar Trailer

If you don’t know already, the new teaser trailer for Avatar is out. What is Avatar? A sci-fi film written and directed by James Cameron (The Terminator, Aliens, Terminator 2, Titanic). I don’t feel like explaining the plot, just look it up on Wikipedia or IMDB. The film was written in 1995 and wasn’t in production until a few years ago. It will be in 3-D with 60% of it being CGI. At Comic-Con, Cameron you wouldn’t be about to tell what is live action and CG. Now the trailer looks good. Damn good. But, you can still tell its CGI, but the CGI is great. I comes out December 18th, and I look forward to seeing it.

Terminator Salvation Review (Spoilers)

I have to say, when I got to the movie theater, I kinda got out of the car like the T-1000 in T2 when he went to John’s house. I had to do that.

Anyway, when I saw the title screen and heard the DUH-DUH-DUH–DUHDUH, I was like holy shit I’m watching a fucking Terminator movie. Within the first half hour or so I was like “This doesn’t feel like a Terminator movie,” but it got a lot better the second half. The fight scenes and the visuals were amazing. The future was great, a gritty and grimy environment and realistic. It wasn’t like, Cameron’s future, hence “This is not the future my mother told me about.” But too bad there wasn’t any kind of epic battle like in T2. There kinda was one, but it was brief.

Marcus Wright was an interesting character and arguably “stole the show” from John Connor. Bale’s performance as John Connor was good, but it is what you’d expect Connor to be. Kyle Reese was a great inclusion in the film and was the most important of the movie even though he’s only a teen. All of the other characters besides those three were stolid, but I felt that they were only auxiliary. Marcus and Kyle were really the only dynamic characters of the film. The plot was decent, but kind of confusing, I guess I’ll have to give it a second watch.

Arnold’s CGI appearance was well done. The CGI wasn’t perfect, but it looked great and unfortunately, only there for about 10 seconds. The final battle was pretty great but it got me thinking. In T1, they were making a big deal about how hard it was to kill a T-800 and in T4, they killed about 3 or 4 in about 10 minutes or so. I don’t really hate that though. “The face of Skynet” think I really didn’t have much of a problem with. It wasn’t just one face, It could be any. The ending was predictable, but still good. Also. there were so many references to the previous film, I am currently making a list of them. Even when a T-800 gets melted and the frozen over was reference to the T-1000 but the opposite happened to it.

The main problem I have with this film is pacing, everything happens too quickly and all in just under 2 hours. In one scene Connor is interrogation Marcus and in the next, he’s listening to his mother’s audio tapes. The movie is set up for a sequel, but not in any direct way, kinda like T3. The final verdict? I give it a 7.5/10. It was solid. Go see it.

Youtube’s Changes – My Thoughts

Well just yesterday, Youtube made some major changes. They made some deals with companies to allow TV shows and movies streaming on Youtube, and made tabs for them on the top of in site. Many people have spoken out of this, saying that it will take views away from user-generated content. I beg to differ.

Youtube has been losing revenue lately. It costs so much for bandwidth and storage for videos. Think about how many videos are uploaded to Youtube daily. Too many. Partner and sponsor ad-enabled videos aren’t enough. I don’t think Youtube particularly wants this but they are being forced to do it, like a band selling out because they’re becoming broke. If anything, this will help Youtube by bringing in more people to watch videos. First they’ll watch the movies and TV shows, but they with discover user-generated content. And its nice to see high quality movies and TV shows to watch at our home that we call Youtube. Most of the current things to watch are old and you’ve probably never heard of a lot of then but in time, they’ll get more deals

So far, I have not seen these on the current videos/categories tab for Youtube honors. That might mean that they won’t and will not detract views from the Youtubers. And there have been some complaints about the popular and rising videos tabs being unfair as well as ratings are not shown. Again, Youtube is losing money and needs to feature partner videos to gain revenue. These new features won’t hurt us Youtubers all that much.

To get views as a small channel, you need the “secret sauce” of Youtube, as Nalts says. There’s a reason why an unpopular channel suddenly gets a viral video that isn’t featured anywhere. It may be do to a popular topic, good tags, or and interesting thumbnail or title. Youtube will remain the same for the most part.

New Projects Coming (again)

So I haven’t posted anything in a while. I haven’t made many new video lately. I haven’t made any real films since September. What have I been doing? Well, I’ve been writing a script for a Matrix fan film and its almost complete. We will probably shoot the film around April 12th, when we get our actors together. We will also do reshoots for Army of Three at the time. We’re probably going to do a few other videos as well and release them over time.

2008: Year in Review

It is a bit late, but whatever. 2008 was great for me. I have been really trying to improve my movies with basic things like lighting and camera work. Overall, I now make better quality movies. 2008 was a great year for Youtube as well. They added the insight feature for each video and channel, where you can view your videos’ views for a certain period of time, its popularity, and demographics. Also, high quality, HD, and widescreen were added to videos to make them look a whole lot better. Although the no bad words rule was pretty dumb. So overall a great year and I hope 2009 will be even better. My movie goals for this year: get a better camera and/or get Final Cut, get a lot of subscribers, and become a Youtube partner.

New Stuff

We are in the making a new film, its a crazy one where we play multiple characters and its about crack. It has a pimp, his son, guido, crack wizard, his crack brother, an Indian Irish cop, and a police chief. We filmed about half of it yesterday. Its pretty long, we had about 28 minutes of raw footage (A lot of it were bloopers), I cut it down to 11 minutes a the film and about 3 minutes of bloopers. We were shooting another video, it was horror where Spencer (me) kills Colin, Zack and a few other Youtubers because he thinks hes being downplayed. We shoot a little bit of it but I don’t know if we’ll follow it up. Army of Three is being delayed due to people not giving me footage.

September Update

Hopefully it will be out by mid-September, a few more people need to get me there videos and I still have most of the editing to do. Also, I am making a blooper reel for Chef Masters. It will probably be around 2.5 – 3 minutes long. It’s only on episodes 1 and 4, since those are the only episodes that have bloopers. Subscribe for more!
